Somali Community Center of Illinois (SCCI) provides various services to the community it represents. The following are the focus areas for SCCI programmatic efforts:

EDUCATION:

1.      K-12 PROGRAMS:

SCCI helps grade school students get tutoring, homework assistance, after school programs, and summer educational and recreation activities. Culture and language lessons are offered five days a week.

2.      ELL and GED PROGRAMS FOR ADULTS AND DISADVANTAGED YOUTH:

SCCI provides English Language Learners (ELL) lessons on weekends and evenings. This program prepares adults whose primary language is different from English to begin to learn to read, write and communicate in English. Learning English helps adults to further their career by pursuing employment or prepare GED and enter college.

3.       COLLEGE LEVEL PROGRAMS:

SCCI provides workshops, group discussions and career counseling to its clients. Students who are interested in working toward their degrees get help here. SCCI discusses with them their career choices, marketable skills, admission process, various financial aides and scholarships. We contact the admission office on their behalf and assist them complete the process. SCCI is planning to initiate a “knowledge exchange day” whereby students from various colleges get together and exchange knowledge on various subjects through presentations and demonstrations. SCCI is also underway to contact the community colleges and universities to provide tutors for various courses in which our students have difficulties mastering them.

4.       COMPUTER LITERACY:  This program aims to teach adults how to use computers, Internet, fax, printers and other IT tools. The objective is to reduce the digital disparities that exist in our community.

5.       SOMALI AND ARABIC LANGUAGE IMMERSION: Teaching children and youth about their heritage and their mother languages.

 

EMPLOYMENT:

1.      TRANSPORTATION INDUSTRY EMPLOYMENT:

SCCI helps clients who seek to drive limos; taxicabs, semi-trucks, and buses get the licenses and start their self-employment.

2.       WORKFORCE CENTER: SCCI establishes workforce center where clients prepare their resumes, learn how to apply jobs and interview skills, how to present to the employer and dress for success. SCCI provides career counseling, job search and job training skills to the interested clients. SCCI will be reaching out potential employers and sell their skills to them. We will provide interpretation and translation services. We will start providing transportation to the employment side in the future.

3.       WOMEN EMPLOYMENT: SCCI is planning to initiate employment programs for women.

4.       VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES: SCCI is offering volunteer opportunities for high school and college students.
